We have a few rules of our own here.

Take the non-smoker allowance, for example.

Just as it sounds, it's an allowance for people who don't smoke. Hoping everyone will run marathons with me one day, we pay a flat 60,000 yen to non-smokers.

It's less that non-smokers gain something and more that smokers lose out. As a result, our smoking rate is zero. Thanks to that, people can even bring their kids along to company drinks.

Other rules include:

  • No sugary options among the company-provided drinks (again, hoping you'll join me for that marathon…).
  • Cleaning the toilets is the president's job (I'm probably the only one who can ask every single visitor to please sit down to pee).

  • We don't look at résumés during interviews (we wouldn't really make sense of them anyway, so we decided to look only at the person).

…and so on.

I can't say exactly what all this has changed, but for now I think we've ended up with a fun group of people.

There must be other companies trying all sorts of things too, so I'd love to borrow their ideas and make this an even better place to work.
