Lately I've often had the chance to talk with students at regional IT vocational schools, and even amid this COVID situation they're studying so seriously that we've been saying around the office, "the next generation of this industry looks bright."
This entry is a word of encouragement to students out there working hard in the regions, and also a word of encouragement to us — to us old guys, saying "we'll do our best too!"
Several years ago I heard from someone at the Miyakojima city hall that because there is no university on the island of Miyakojima, most students leave Miyakojima after graduating high school, whether to go on to further study or to find work — and that this is a problem for the island as a whole.
They said the same kind of problem is a concern held by regions all across Japan.
To solve this problem, various attempts — attracting companies, nurturing industries, and so on — were advanced under the banner of regional revitalization, but Tokyo's over-concentration, far from decreasing, only grew ever sharper.
But the COVID situation changed many things.
Telework was encouraged, distance came to be seen as less important, Tokyo's over-concentration was reconsidered, and as a result several people around me have returned to their hometowns.
Whether that choice is right, I don't yet know.
What "normal" will look like from here is something society as a whole is feeling its way toward, so the results will come a bit further down the road — but I believe that challenge will absolutely never be a minus.
Likewise, there are business owners who have started various challenges amid the COVID situation.
Many companies have started takeout, launched mail-order sales, or boldly transformed their business itself in a big way.
When society as a whole is taking on challenges like this, young people like you — with enthusiasm and IT knowledge — are sure to shine.
It may look like wasted effort right now.
There may be times it goes unrewarded.
But a challenge you worked hard on will absolutely come back to you someday as a plus.
I want you to take on challenges like that, and we old guys will work hard and take on challenges too, no less than you.
We, tentus, are a coined word combining [tent], representing an adventurous spirit, and [us], representing a team.
Taking on challenges with your comrades, carrying an adventurous spirit, is sure to serve you well in the era ahead.
Do your best, all of you.
We'll do our best too!
