Making clear what the client wants to do — requirements definition means: ■ Aligning understanding with the client ⇒ Aligning your understanding of the client's (the company's) problems, constraints, scope, deliverables, and so on.

Purpose ■ Nail down the items needed for estimating (deliverables, tasks, etc.) ⇒ Align understanding so that a quotation can be produced.

■ Decide the communication rules with the client ⇒ Decide things like the timing for obtaining approvals (regular meetings, etc.), and that instructions will go by email or a task-management tool rather than by phone, so that the project runs smoothly.

Points to watch ■ If you don't align understanding, there's a risk it gets overturned later ⇒ There's a chance that once you've started work, they say "this was supposed to be like this." Make sure you have it locked in on your side.
